Windows Chief Terry Myerson Leaving Microsoft

A main fixture on Microsoft's executive team is exiting the company.

In an email to employees Thursday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Windows Chief Terry Myerson is gearing up to "pursue his next chapter outside Microsoft."

"Over the past several years, Terry and the [Windows and Devices Group] transformed Windows to create a secure, always up-to-date, modern OS," Nadella wrote. "His strong contributions to Microsoft over 21 years from leading Exchange to leading Windows 10 leave a real legacy. I want to thank Terry for his leadership on my team and across Microsoft."

Myerson took control of the Windows team in 2013, shortly before Steve Ballmer announced his retirement.

Today, Microsoft also announced the formation of two new engineering teams. Rajesh Jha, who currently serves as EVP of the Office product group, has been tapped to lead a new "Experiences and Devices," team that will work to "instill a unifying product ethos across our end-user experiences and devices," Nadella wrote.

Scott Guthrie, EVP of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise group, will lead a new "Cloud and AI Platform" team that will "drive platform coherence and compelling value across all layers of the tech stack."

"Terry has been instrumental in helping me arrive at this new organizational structure, and I deeply appreciate his leadership and insight as we've worked through the opportunity that lies ahead," Nadella wrote.

On LinkedIn Thursday, Myerson wrote that he's "filled with gratitude and optimism" for his experiences at Microsoft and what lies ahead.

"After working fulltime pretty much nonstop since I was 18, missing many a kids birthday while traveling for work, I'm ready for a break," he wrote. "I will now take some time to train for a half Ironman, learn to play the piano or guitar." Also on the agenda: "learning more about genomics and robotics which fascinate me, and spending some overdue quality time with Katie and our kids."
