The smart speaker wars are heating up with all the major consumer tech companies beginning to compete. And competition means price cuts, which is exactly what Amazon is offering today.
The Amazon Echo usually costs $179.99, but The Verge noticed that for today only the price has been reduced by $50 to just $129.99. Or another way to look at it: the Echo now costs the same as Google Home, at least temporarily. The price cut applies to both the black and white versions of the Echo.
If you're still unsure about clicking the buy button, here's a reminder of what the Alexa-equipped smart speaker is capable of.
As well as carrying out the main task of a speaker by playing all your music (using 360-degree omnidirectional audio), the Echo can access a range of music playing services including Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and more. Calls and messaging can also be handled hands-free, as can other devices in your home including lights, switches, locks, and connected devices such as Philips Hue and Nest.
There's also that other key selling point of the Echo: Alexa and her ability to answer all your questions with a voice command. The ever-growing list of skills will likely satiate any other feature requests you may have that aren't shipped as standard.
With a 28 percent discount attached for today only, it's not hard to predict this being one of the Echo's best-selling days all year. Will you be spending $130 to put Alexa in your home today (or yet another room)?
