Worried your kid spends too much time staring at a screen? A new wearable device from Fitbit aims to encourage them to get active.
First unveiled in March, Fitbit's first fitness tracker for kids, dubbed Ace, is now available at major retailers worldwide for $99.99. Designed for kids ages 8 and older, Ace tracks your kid's steps, active minutes, and sleep; reminds them to move each hour; and rewards them with celebratory messages and badges when they meet their activity goals. Because it's designed for kids, Ace will not highlight calorie intake, weight, or body fat/BMI.
Ace comes in two kid-friendly colors: "power purple" and "electric blue." It's adjustable to fit wrists 5 to 6.34 inches in circumference, is safe to wear in the shower, and promises to offer up to five days of battery life on a charge.

Parents can review their kid's activity, manage what stats they see, and approve who they can connect with from a new family account feature in the Fitbit app. Kids can use the app to track their stats and the badges they've earned, exchange messages and "cheers" with approved contacts, and challenge others to step competitions.

"Fitbit Ace opens up a direct line of communication across the family to help parents and their children understand how physical activity impacts overall wellbeing and health," Dr. Ryan Rhodes, an exercise psychologist, Director of the Behavioural Medicine Lab at the University of Victoria in Canada, and a Fitbit Advisory Panel member, said in a statement. "When parents have insight into their kids' activity, they are better positioned to then promote less screen-time and more physical activity in a fun and motivating way."
