How to Cancel or Modify Your Netflix Subscription

You can tweak your Netflix account or put the kibosh on it altogether. Here’s how.

Are you no longer interested in keeping your current Netflix subscription alive? Perhaps you don't watch it as much these days. Or maybe you can't afford multiple video-streaming services.

Either way, you have two choices. You can modify your subscription and make it less painful on the wallet by cutting back on certain options. Or you can cancel it outright. Modifying is often a good option to choose initially to see if a different plan falls within your budget. But cancelling may be the way to go if you simply don't watch Netflix's offerings any longer.

Let's first go through the steps for modifying your subscription.

  • 1Netflix.com

Open your browser and surf to the Netflix website. Click on the Sign in button in the upper-right corner if you're not already logged in.

  • 2Sign In

Sign in with your username and password. If you maintain more than one Netflix profile for different family members, click on the button for your profile.

  • 3Your Account

At the next screen, click on the down arrow next to your profile image in the upper-right corner and click on "Your Account" from the drop-down menu.

  • 4Plan Details

Your Netflix account page displays your various settings and information, including a section on plan details. Depending on what type of plan you have, you’ll see details for a streaming plan or a DVD plan or both. Let’s assume you have both.

  • 5Change Streaming Plan

For the streaming plan, click on the link to change plan. A "Change Streaming Plan" screen pops up giving you a few different choices. Assuming you want to scale back on your streaming to reduce the price, click on one of the less expensive options and click on the "Continue" button.

  • 6Confirm

Netflix asks you to confirm the change. Click on the "Confirm Change" button, and your plan change will go into effect at the start of your next billing cycle.

  • 7DVD Plan

Now let's say you want to modify your DVD plan. Click on the Go Back button at the "Change Streaming Plan" screen to return to your account page. For the DVD plan, click on the link to change plan. The "Change Plan" page displays the various DVD plans. Again, assuming you want to scale back, click on one of the cheaper plan options and then click on the "Continue button."

  • 8Confirm

At the "Change DVD Plan" window, click on the "Confirm Change" button. The change will take place at your next billing cycle.

  • 9Cancel DVD

If you want to cancel your DVD plan, go back to your account page and click on "Cancel DVD plan." Netflix tries to convince you to hang onto the plan. There's even an option to pause your shipments should you simply want to give the plan a rest for awhile. But if your mind is made up, click on the “Cancel My DVD Plan” button. Again, your plan remains in effect until the end of the current billing cycle.

  • 10Cancel Account

Okay, now let's say you want to cancel your account altogether. If you have both a streaming and DVD plan, you need to cancel each one separately. First, let's return to your Netflix account page. If you wish to cancel your streaming subscription, click on the link to "Cancel Streaming Plan." At the page to "Cancel Your Streaming Plan?" click on the "Finish Cancellation" button. Your streaming plan will be cancelled at the end of your current billing cycle.
