John Oliver Is Hopelessly Wrong About Prince Harry & Meghan Markle

John Oliver Is Hopelessly Wrong About Prince Harry & Meghan Markle thumbnail

John Oliver appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he discussed the latest gossip about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Oliver mistakenly believes that Harry and Meghan were trapped in a “horrible situation.” His hot take misses the point entirely. Oh great, John Oliver is back in the headlines, talking about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in that weird, awkward, and not very funny way that he does. His appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was yet another opportunity for Oliver to throw some jibes at the royal family. Watch the full interview below: He hates them, don’t you know? It’s sooo hilarious, right? John Oliver Plays It Safe With Royal Family Commentary The U.K. churns out these cringe-inducing “comedians” on a fairly regular basis. You know the type. They play it safe with their comedy while pretending to be controversial and opinionated. Oliver’s initial view of the wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry was that she “doesn’t know what she’s getting herself into.” An interesting take, if we’re to assume Markle was an innocent, doe-eyed American who just wanted to marry the man of her dreams. What John Oliver is omitting is that Meghan Markle had been down that aisle before. Remember when she wanted to get into acting and married an actor and producer? That didn’t work out quite as she’d hoped, but in Prince Harry, she knew exactly what she was getting herself into. Forget The Crown – This Is House of Cards John Oliver’s hot take on Harry and Meghan name-drops the wrong Netflix series. | Source: Silvia Elizabeth Pangaro/Shutterstock.comJohn Oliver believes that being part of the royal family “was a horrible situation for them to be in.” It was a horrible situation for them to be in. I think one of the recent times I was on this show, before the wedding, I was saying this is gonna be rough. The British tabloid press is rough on royalty. So I understand why they wanted to get out of there. Oliver mentions the Netflix show The Crown as proof of the media ringer that royals must endure. But in reality, their relationship is more like Frank and Claire Underwood’s marriage in House of Cards. It’s a relationship of convenience. The Truth About Prince Harry & Meghan Markle It’s flabbergasting how readily supporters believe the party line that Harry and Meghan ditched their royal duties because they couldn’t bear to live in the public eye. Or worse, when they blame it on racism. The reason they left the U.K. for North America is ridiculously simple. It should be evident to anyone not blinded by the nonsense spouted by the likes of John Oliver. The end game is to cash in on a lucrative royal brand that they can sell to an American audience. Forget The Crown. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle look more like the Underwoods in House of Cards. | Source: REUTERS/Damir Sagolj/File PhotoThis move suits both parties. Meghan Markle has finally “arrived” after years of trying and failing to climb the Hollywood ladder. She is now at the head of a brand that will rake in hundreds of millions of dollars over the next few years. As for poor old Prince Harry? He was always the red-headed stepchild in the royal family. Forever destined to be outshone by his more charismatic and engaging brother, William. Harry was sixth in line to the British throne. The best he could hope to accomplish was to become the King’s brother. Remaining in the royal family would have seen Meghan Markle forever lost in the shadow of Kate Middleton. She couldn’t accept that. Her weird, obsessive fans couldn’t accept that either. The narrative that Middleton receives better press than Meghan does due to racism is false. She’s just infinitely more likable. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will make a lot of money in the U.S., no doubt. But they’ll never be anything more than a second rate Prince William and Kate.
