Microsoft Announces 4 New Xbox One S Bundles

Minecraft, Rocket League, Starter, and Ultimate Halo bundles make up Microsoft's bid to try and dominate Christmas sales.

We are fast approaching that time of year where everyone has to start thinking about buying nice things for other people. It's also a key time for games console sales, and Microsoft is attempting to present a very strong line-up of Xbox bundles to entice you away from the market-leading PS4.

Alongside the Xbox One X launch next month, Microsoft is introducing four new Xbox One S bundles for the fall. The thinking here is clearly to provide something for everyone.

The four bundles are as follows:

  • Xbox One S Minecraft Complete Adventure Bundle
  • Xbox One S Rocket League Blast-Off Bundle
  • Xbox One S Starter Bundle
  • Xbox One S Ultimate Halo Bundle

Regardless of which bundle is chosen, Microsoft includes an Xbox One S with a 500GB hard drive and an Xbox Wireless Controller. Each bundle also ships with Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass offers of between 14 days and three months. All four bundles cost $279, although it looks as though the Rocket League bundle may not be offered in the US.

Where the main differences lie between the bundles is in the games they offer. For the Minecraft bundle, Microsoft offers a full game download code for Minecraft, the Minecraft Explorer's pack, and Minecraft: Story Mode Season 1 – The Complete Adventure (episodes 1-8). The Rocket League bundle includes a full game download code for the game, nothing more.

The Starter bundle mixes things up by not including a game, instead opting to increase the free access to Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass to three months each. I'm surprised this bundle isn't a little cheaper than those including a free game to keep forever.

Finally, we have the Ultimate Halo bundle, which will be sold exclusively at Walmart in the US. Microsoft includes a full game download of Halo 5: Guardians and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. It does skimp on the Xbox Live Gold access though, offering a 14-day pass.

Of the four, the Minecraft bundle seems to offer the best value and will certainly be the best choice if buying for a younger gamer. I doubt the Starter bundle will be very popular when consumers (parents especially) learn there's no game included, only subscription offers.

It's also worth remembering Microsoft will release the Xbox One S Assassin's Creed Origins bundle on October 27. It will cost $349 for the 1TB model and includes a download copy of Assassin's Creed Origins.
