Amazon's lineup of inexpensive Fire tablets just got a bit cheaper.
The online retail giant is offering $10 discounts on the 8GB Fire, the $20 off the 16GB Fire HD 8 (above) and the Fire Kids Edition. The Fire normally sells for $49.99, while the Fire HD 8 costs $89.99, and the Kids Edition, with a protective outer shell, is $99.99.
If you're thinking about picking up a few tablets while they're on sale, Amazon is also offering a $20 discount on the Fire Variety Pack, which includes two 8GB Fire tablets and normally sells for $99.98. There's no listed expiration date on these deals, but we don't expect them to stick around for long.
If you decide to pull the trigger, you'll get a lot of bang for your buck, even compared to Apple tablets. The Fire includes a 1,024-by-600-pixel display, which is the same resolution as the original Apple iPad mini. You don't get a lot of processing power, and the 7-hour battery life is fairly standard, but you can boost both by stepping up to the Fire HD 8, which includes a 12-hour battery and a 1.3GHz quad-core processor.

Besides its affordability, one of the Fire's main selling points is that it's able to take a punch or two. Amazon says the Fire and Fire HD 8 are twice as durable as an iPad mini 4, and the 16GB Kids edition has a pink or green "kid-proof" case and a two-year, no-questions-asked replacement guarantee in case your kid does manage to break it.
Meanwhile, Fire's major drawback is its app ecosystem. Although you'll find versions of many popular apps and games made for the Fire OS, the collection is significantly smaller than what you'll find on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
