Today’s News

Uber’s crime report is “highly alarming,” says a criminologist

In a new report, Uber says there were more than 3,000 sexual assaults related to Uber rides last year—an average of 8 per day—and that drivers reported sexual assaults at roughly the same rate that riders did. The report also said that nine people were murdered and 58 were killed last year in crashes related to the transportation app. To combat this, Uber has been introducing new features to improve rider safety like the ability to text 911 directly from the app.

T-Mobile’s “nationwide” 5G isn’t quite worth it—yet

It’s true that T-Mobile is testing 5G, but it may not be the ultra-fast network of the future you were promised. You’ll see slightly faster load times when watching videos and downloading apps when you’re on it, but your day-to-day experience won’t change much. And although this slight change may not matter much now, it serves as the building block for our hyper-fast future.

Fast Fact: 1,100 Pounds

That’s how much pressure is on each square foot of a passenger jet at typical cruising altitude. So if you live with the fear that someone will try to open the door mid-flight and suck all the passengers out, you can sleep a little easier knowing the likelihood of that is basically zero.

WIRED Recommends: Leica SL 2

If you’re in the market for a powerful, DSLR-style camera that delivers not only sharp images but surprisingly powerful video capabilities, the Leica SL 2 is about as good as it gets. Well, that is, if you have $6,000 to spend on it.
